As I mentioned on February 14th, Kurt Angle's website has had a major overhaul. At the time, Karen Angle's section of the website was still under construction.

I've just checked, and the Karen Angle side is now live (It appears to be her MySpace. She has Forrest Griffin as a friend... no fair! )

On an unrelated side note, I'll be posting my commentary about the 2/22/2008 airing of WWE Friday Night Smackdown!, basically when I get to it.

In Defense of Kurt Angle

So last night I was reading the Camel Clutch blog. Normally, I'm a fan, and agree with what Eric Gargiulo writes.

Last night was different. Eric's article yesterday was a 'Let's bash Kurt Angle' article, or as he put it, "the newest edition of 'Kurt Angle... idiot'". Now I don't have any issues with Eric or Camel Clutch specifically... and I am by no means 'calling him out'... and I'm not intending to pick a fight,

but...

Eric's article is the straw that broke Shawn Michael's back. There seems to be a growing trend with wrestling blogs, news and gossip sites, and frankly, I have had enough. It seems like many have turned their back on Kurt Angle, and unjustly so.

So where do I begin?

I suppose we'll start with Eric Gargiulo's rant. The focus of Eric's bashing was in response to Kurt Angle's appearance on The Scott Ferrel Show on Sirius satellite radio. I didn't listen to the show, so I'm trusting that what Eric is writing about is accurate. In the interview, Kurt Angle apparently voiced interest in fighting Randy Couture. Well, first of all, let's address what Eric said:

"Couture just signed a deal with HD Net, Mark Cuban’s MMA promotion. Cuban has the resources to make this fight happen, but so does UFC."

Well, the possibilities of this happening, at least before October, are no, Randy's not with the UFC anymore. Randy retired with UFC due to their inability to sign Fedor Emelianenko... and no, due to the non-compete clause, Randy Couture can't work with any rival companies until at least October. As for Kurt Angle's 'excuse after excuse' about why he won't take fights, and Dana White 'calling bullsh*t'. It's well known that Dana wouldn't allow Kurt Angle to continue to wrestle if he signed a deal with UFC. Kurt is loyal to TNA for obvious reasons (we'll talk more about that later).

I wonder what examples you are thinking of, exactly, Eric. Do you mean the challenge from Ken Shamrock? Who would be willing to face Ken Shamrock with only 2.5 months of training allowed before the fight? Are you talking about Daniel Puder? I don't think anyone in pro wrestling would give Puder the respect of facing him after he took the easy way into the business and then bailed on his Tough Enough contract. As for Randy Couture, who knows if Kurt Angle would stand a chance... but if you think Angle wouldn't be successful in MMA, you're a fool. Regardless of prior injuries, the guy is built like, and moves like, a jungle cat. Anyway, I'm sorry that this entry so far seems to be directed at you, Eric, it wasn't meant to be.

Moving on. I'm sick of hearing that Kurt Angle is 'delusional', or 'in denial', or 'insane'. So cut it out, bucko.

First let's address the new TNA iMPACT! video game being done by Midway. Kurt Angle drew a lot of heat for remarks he made about the game. Read on:

"Midway made us all care about [the game], because it made us all realize how important the video game industry is for our sport,"

"WWE don't care. They just want to put something together, hurry it up and get it out there just to make money. We spent a lot of money to make this the most authentic wrestling game ever, and we did it."

"This thing is going to be the biggest hit of any video game ever, especially in the wrestling industry, is the most authentic wrestling game ever made. The game is so realistic, it looks like our television show.

"Within two or three years, TNA is going to be the biggest company in the wrestling world, and this game is going to be our kick-off,"

Okay. Well, WWE doesn't care about video games. This is evidenced by the latest WWE game, Smackdown vs. Raw 2008. If you haven't played it, read my review here on Wrestling Rant. Pong! was a better wrestling game than SvR 2008. It's obvious from looking at the screenshots that TNA's game is a far cry from any other wrestling titles. I don't know that TNA's new game would overtake Halo 3, but it's going to sell well in the sports and action titles. As for the last statement... while it's a little ambitious, I don't necessarily know that it's delusional. A lot can happen in three years... and no one but TNA knows what their business plan is. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that I am the furthest thing from a fan of the TNA product, but I honestly hope they do get their act together and succeed.

Now let's talk about Kurt's statements about TNA itself. Sure, Kurt Angle might be a bit liberal or broad when talking about the margin between WWE and TNA ratings... but you know what? That's marketing. Do you expect him to say, 'Oh yeah Vince is kicking our ass in the ratings this week'. Of course not. He believes in the product, and he's going to do whatever he can to help the company along. Kurt Angle is standing behind the company that stood behind him in the aftermath of Kurt Angle's WWE release.

Does no one remember the whole (I'm paraphrasing) "Olympic Gold Medals and 50 cents will get you a cup of coffee." comment made by Vince McMahon?

I mean geezus... I wouldn't go so far as to say Kurt Angle carried WWE, but ever since Kurt Angle blew his nose in Tiger Ali Singh's flag in March of '99, he was the staple of the company through 2006. When Triple H was injured... when Shawn Michaels was injured... when Undertaker was on hiatus... when the The Rock left... when Brock Lesnar left... when 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin left... when Mick Foley left... (etc. etc. etc.) Kurt Angle was there. Hell, even when he re-injured his neck after Wrestlemania 20 he stayed on board in the god-awful GM-in-a-wheelchair storyline on Smackdown. Most guys would have taken off. With all the things he did for WWE, Vince had the nerve to make the 'cup of coffee' comment because Kurt was asking for a lighter schedule? To make matters worse, Vince McMahon insinuates the Kurt Angle was being released because had a drug problem? Ridiculous.

The guy put his ass on the line for us for years. He busted his ass for us for years. Did I forget to mention that he won an Olympic gold medal with a 'broken freakin' neck'? Give Kurt Angle the respect he deserves, and stop nitpicking. Whether you like it or not, Kurt Angle is one of the all-time greats. Oh it's true, it's damn true.

TNA iMPACT! 2/21/2008

As seems to be by current Thursday Night TV-viewing schedule, after Survivor: Micronesia last night I hit the record button on the DVR and recorded the second half of TNA iMPACT... so, my commentary starts at the beginning or the second hour...

Firstly, from what I saw, gimmick infringement was less pronounced last night. Bubba Ray Dudley slapped the ref ala Randy Orton at No Way Out, he also stole Eddie Guerrero's use-weapon-fall-down-while-ref's-back-is-turned gimmick, Gail Kim hit Jericho's Code Breaker, and of course, 'Stone Cold' Shark Boy. At least none of it happened on the mic.

The first match was basically a replay of last week, Team 3-D vs. Curry Man & Shark Boy, except this time Brother Devon didn't weigh in under the 275 limit (I had a hard time buying this. These days Devon is built like a brick sh*thouse. Bubba Ray is still as bulky as he's always been). I thought it was odd that Bubba Ray managed to hang on to the mic during Curry Man's school boy roll-up so that he could apologize to Devon for admonishing him about eating Twinkies. I wish this storyline hadn't gone down this route. Team 3-D was headed in the direction of the old-ECW Dudley Boys, superheels that were so abusive that they came close to causing riots in the crowd. Are we really supposed to believe that tiny Shark Boy can take down Brother Bubba Ray with a Lou Thesz press? Come on. Team 3-D gets the win after weapon usage (apparently weight scales are weapons now).

Kurt Angle cut a good promo. It was good to seem him on the mic again, actually talking about wrestling.

We come back from commercial to a promo with AJ Styles and Karen Angle, on their 'honeymoon' at Gatorland (I remember this place from when I was a kid. We'd drive past the 'Jumparoo' sign on the highway all the time. I thought that this place burned down a couple years ago?) Anyway, every time I hear him talk, I am astounded that AJ Styles character is written as such a witless, braindead hick. This guy is an amazing talent, and I think this persona cheapens his value. The promo was pointless. It's a stupid storyline, and who care about AJ and Karen at a second-rate amusement park.

The highlight of the night (of what I watched), was the Knockouts tag match. In my eyes, TNA has one thing going for it right now, and that's the women's division. The TNA Knockouts can (and do) actually wrestle. Personally, as long as it doesn't turn into what G.L.O.W. was, I'd love to see TNA roll out the rumored all-women show. On a side note, Jessica 'ODB' Kresa scares the Hell out of me. She doesn't have the frame of a woman, or carry herself like a woman. I must admit, the first time that I ever saw her, my gut-reaction was, 'Is that a transsexual?!' Yes, I went there. To this day, I find myself looking for an adam's apple, as well as her pronounced jawline. Sorry ODB... I don't mean to be rude, but looking at you is highly disturbing. (Please don't hunt me down and kill me in my sleep, She-Man. Oh, and tell Battle Cat and Orko that I said 'Hi')

Separated at birth? You be the judge

The Knockouts match was packed with action. Lots of exciting moves. Better than a lot of men's matches that I have watched on TNA. Gail Kim was awesome (WWE was a fool to let her get away) and Ms. Jacqueline looked better than she ever did on WWE. Roxxi Laveaux won clean after a fall away slam on Gail Kim. After the pin, ODB and Gail Kim start arguing over the loss. Gail Kim does a cross body from the turnbuckle onto ODB on the floor and it devolves into a street fight. Predictable.

Following the Knockouts match, there was an interview promo with Christian Cage, Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash. I'm not really sure why Joe and Nash were present, if there were just going to stand there and nod while Christian talked (Yes, the three are tagging now, but at leave give them something, anything to say). Christian has really bloomed since going to TNA. I wish TNA offered a better product so he could continue to shine. Working on this show has got to be like trying to polish a turd.

There was a second AJ Styles/Karen Angle promo. Pointless.

The Main Event, oh sorry... TNA calls it the 'Featured Contest', was Kurt Angle vs. Booker T. I was excited about this match, but it turned out to be a real disappointment. We were really supposed to believe that Kurt Angle would get his ass handed to him like that by Booker T? At least make it look competitive. Kurt Angle looked totally innefective against Booker, and that just doesn't make sense. On a side note, I don't know who is designing Kurt Angle's attire these days, but they should be fired. I've never been a fan of the olympic torch singlet, or the little white baby shoes... but with the 70's gym socks, it was the worst. There isn't a whole lot to say about the actual match, except Kurt looked inept, Booker looked too good, we saw another expected run-in interruption (Robert Roode) which allowed Kurt to get the Angle Slam off for the pin. Angle, Booker, Roode were joined by Christian... then Samoa Joe... then Kevin Nash.. then Tomko. Run-ins can be an exciting event, but not if they seem to happen every single week.

Again standard TNA fare this week... but the Knockouts stole the show. Nice work ladies (Oh, and you too, ODB).

Paul Heyman's Latest Sun Interview: This is going to p*** people off

UK tabloid, The Sun, released another frank interview with Paul Heyman today. Paul Heyman delves even further into the behind-the-scenes world of professional wrestling and sports entertainment.

In the first portion of the interview, he elaborates a bit further on his working relationship with Stephanie McMahon. I was surprised in the initial interview about Heyman's comments about Steph, and even more surprised by this one... extremely respectful and complimentary. I don't know Stephanie McMahon, but I personally don't like some of the things she's doing with creative (yeah, before you flame me, internet readers, I know she doesn't write everything... but she is the head of the team. Oh by the way, thanks for adding the term, 'The Vinc-ess' to my vocabulary, Paul. Heh).

Paul Heyman goes on to talk about his conspiracy theory about the 'heir' of WWE. Heyman believes that Vince will control WWE well into his 90's, and pass control onto one of Shane McMahon's sons so that 'a McMahon' is controlling the company. I had never considered this before, but it makes total sense. I must admit though, secretly, I'd love to see what would happen if Triple H gained some control of the company via Steph. I know, according to the rumor mill, Trips is supposedly on his high horse behind the scenes, and looks down on a lot of the talent. If it's true, while I can't say I condone looking down your (large) nose at the other talent, I honestly don't see how he couldn't be on a high horse. Trips is 'that damn good', and never fails to entertain. Maybe I've bought into the hype... maybe I'm brainwashed, but Hulk Hogan was right (I can't believe I'm standing behind Hogan).

What am I talking about, you ask? Yesterday, Hulk Hogan was on The View to promote American Gladiators No, I don't watch The View. Seriously, I watched it on the internet. What do you mean you don't believe me? Fine, here (wrestling talk is about 2:53 in):

Hogan is right. There are no more 'larger-than-life characters like The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin. Triple H is about as close as we come. I hate to live in the past, but how I miss WWE's 'Attitude Era'. Just a side note... I had to laugh about Hogan's mention of 'the old days' (about 5:00 in) and 'the guys' that would 'punch you in the face if someone said wrestling was fake'. Hulk, do you mean like on March 27th, 1985 when you choked out Richard Belzer and dropped him on the floor during a TV interview with you and Mr. T, when he asked you if it was fake? When you say 'guys', you mean 'guys' like you, right? You're not so innocent, Hulkster... Some of us remember... Brother.

Anyway, I'm rambling...

Paul Heyman goes on to talk about what's 'wrong' with TNA. I never realized it, but he's totally right. It should be obvious to anyone. The problem, is branding. The following quotes pretty much sum it up:

'You look at Kurt Angle and you think WWE. You look at Booker T and think WCW, five-time, five-time, five-time or King Booker in WWE. You look at The Dudleys and think ECW or WWE or even tables.'

He goes on to say:

'I don't think the problem is in the talent, it's in the BRANDING of that talent. If you walked Angle through the airport, nobody would say: "There's that guy from TNA."

Nobody equates Angle, or anybody in that company, to TNA. As a company, they desperately need to address that.'

Absolutely true.

Paul also talks about the ideas of join forces with TNA, Ring of Honor, and even MMA promotions IFL & Yamma.

It's a good read. Given the sports entertainment interviews that The Sun keeps putting up, it appears that Paul Heyman will be addressing both celebrity gossip and sports entertainment. At least, one can hope.

Kurt Angle Website Redesign

Kurt Angle's website has been revamped! Oh it's true... It's damn true! (I still can't bring myself to say 'It's damn real')

The site is now much cleaner and easy to navigate. New sections have been added such as 2008 Ultimate Teen Challenge, a video library, downloads, additional photos and much more.

In addition to the merchandise section, there is also now a new section where you can purchase Kurt Angle collector's items (WWE Singlets, Team Angle warm-up gear, autographs & more)

On the landing page there is also a link to Karen Angle's section of the website. Karen Angle's section is still under construction.

TNA iMPACT! 2/7/08

Yeah, I know what I said last week. 'TNA, I'm done with you'. What can I say? Last night after watching Survivor: Micronesia and Lost, I was browsing the guide, saw TNA and pressed the record button on the remote. I recorded/watched the second hour of TNA.

I have tried to get behind this show. Really hard. They don't make it easy.

Between the blatant gimmick infringement, announce team (yes, announce team. I'll comment more later), ultra-cheap production values and uninteresting writing, I just can't do it. Oh, and then there's Christy Hemme.

The first match I saw was 'okay'. Rock and Rave Infection vs. Curry Man & Shark Boy. I'm not sure why Christopher Daniels is doing the Curry Man bit. His other persona is much more entertaining. I mean, seriously... Curry Man is more like a character from Kaiju Big Battel. Shark Boy, no comment, except that I wish he'd stayed silent. Bah, forget it... I've given this match more thought than it deserved.

Next match, Tiger Mask vs. AJ Styles. Not much to say here either, except I love to watch AJ Styles... (but I wish he'd stay off of the mic, too). Moving on...

Christian Cage vs. Judas Mesias: I don't know why, but this match seemed really slow to me. There were some Lucha-esque 2nd rope moves (weren't very good). Christian makes a great headliner. I wish WWE would've given him more spotlight. One good thing about TNA, they give the non-bodybuilder types spotlight. I wish Vince would lose his bodybuilder fetish. Judas Mesias. This isn't TNA-specific, I never have been a big fan of the monster heel/face wrestlers. I don't know why. Maybe it was because we were told (forever) that Kane was nearly burned alive, as as the years went by, and lost more and more clothing, there wasn't one scar. Let's look at Undertaker for example... Taker's American Badass persona was much more frightening than rehashing the original Undertaker. Look at Viscera. Big Daddy V, to me anyway, is way more terrifying than the guy in the pantsuit. I know the monster personas will never go away... it's part of the tradition, but one can hope. To get back on topic and sum this up, Christian won, Abyss ran in, AJ Styles ran in, Kurt Angle ran in, Tomko ran in. Are we really to believe that Kurt hangs out in the back in dress pants, dress shoes with no shirt on? Heh.

Let's look at my gripes with TNA:

Gimmick Infringement
I've addressed gimmick rip-offs before, and I'm not gonna beat a dead horse. The bottom line, don't do it. It really gives an amateur feel to the show. Why revive and impersonate popular characters from your direct competitor's past? That won't win us over... it pisses us off.

Announce Team
I'm not sure why, but the announce team is important to me. I think it plays an important part in televised wrestling. Maybe it's because I am getting older. If you asked me why, I couldn't tell you, but I don't like listening to Mike Tenay and Don West. I don't 'believe' that they are experts. Their commentary reminds me of those bars where they show football footage and patrons can give the play-by-play. The timing and delivery isn't very good either. In the Christian vs Judas match, James Mitchel distracted Christian on the turnbuckle. Mike Tenay started talking about Judas' counter before Christian left the top rope. I have had, and still have, the same problem with Joey Styles. As great as 'old' ECW was, I hated the commentary, especially 'Oh my God!' and 'Cat Fight'. I hate it now. I thinks that's one of the major factors that I'm not that into the 'new' ECW (not to mention Vince changing Paul E's formula).

Ultra Cheap Production Values
Yes, I know TNA doesn't have the capital that WWE has, but come on. You're not that broke. Give the Rock and Roll Infection some real guitars. Hell, you can buy a Squier Fender Strat for $100. If you insist on AJ wearing a crown (still not clear why he does), don't buy one from the 'let's play dress-up' section of the dollar store.

Uninteresting Writing
I have found it hard to care about TNA's storylines. While I realize the important part is the wrestling, I also follow the storylines. As I've said previously in this blog, maybe it's due to my age. To me, wrestling is a soap opera for men. TNA just doesn't give me a reason to tune in week after week. To be blunt, if I miss a week, I don't care what happened.

Don't get me wrong, WWE isn't all roses and sunshine. They have their fair share of bad storylines too... Palumbo/Noble/McCool, Deuce & Domino, Edge/Vickie, remember Triple H/Kane/Katie Vick? Awful... WWE is the other extreme, too much writing...

To paraphrase Lance Storm (I don't remember the exact quote), "I like a little more sports in my entertainment". I want a happy medium between the two.

Christy Hemme
While not a main reason for my gripes, Christy has gotten increasingly annoying since moving to TNA. She was annoying on WWE, but not like now. I'm not sure if the current version is the real, or kayfabe Christy. It makes you wonder if in WWE they tried to tone down the spastic, annoying Christy, or on TNA if that is supposed to be a part of the character, or if that who she really is because there's more freedom on TNA. All I know, is I thought Melina squeals and screams were bad. They pale in comparison to Miss Hemme. Someone, please, get her some Ritalin and a gag.

Needless to say, I won't be buying 'Against All Odds'. You need to give me more reason to give you my money, TNA.

My final thought... Kurt, please get rid of those little white wrestling shoes. Those are way worse than Trip's old white cheerleader booties.

Video Game Preview: Midway's TNA iMPACT! Screenshots

Midway has released new screenies for the upcoming TNA iMPACT! video game. I must say, they look great. It appears a few of them are from Kurt Angle, Booker T and Scott Steiner's entrances. They look dead on. Photograph quality.

To date Midway has announced the inclusion of the following wrestlers from the TNA stable: Abyss, Kurt Angle, Christian Cage, Christopher Daniels, Sonjay Dutt, Hernandez, Homicide, Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, Rhino, Chris Sabin, Samoa Joe, Senshi, Alex Shelley, Scott Steiner, Sting, A.J. Styles & Eric Young. You also see Jeff Hardy in the image above. we'll have to wait and see if he'll be included in the final release. A complete roster will be available closer to the game's launch.

In addition to the more than 25 wrestlers, TNA iMPACT! will feature a create-a-wrestler (CAW) mode that allows the player to play their own wrestler in story mode.

The game is slated for release for 'Spring 08) for the Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and the Wii.

TNA, I'm Done with you

TNA, I'm done with you.

Watching TNA, is painful. I'm not gonna watch it anymore.

Even watching TNA, watching an episode recorded on my DVR, watching an episode that I can fast forward through, is painful. I'm not gonna watch it anymore.

Complete, and utter garbage. Yes, on TNA I don't have to watch the god-awful T&A Diva garbage that I hate so much on the WWE shows... yes, for the most part, the wrestling is more exciting to watch... but the poor gimmicks... the blatant gimmick infringement... and the horrendous storylines are not worth my time. Anytime I watch TNA, I find myself thinking, 'I want this two hours of my life back'.

Watching TNA is like digging through a tub of raw sewage and vomit to find a dollar floating around on the bottom.

Kurt, yes, you are (and always have been) my Olympic Hero, but I can't wade through the crap to see you anymore.

As I feared, and I knew better, the Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir match was over in 90 seconds.



Brock came out strong, dumped Frank Mir and started pounding the life out of him with brutal hammerfists. We even saw a beautiful float over. Frank Mir's forehead was busted open within 30 seconds.

Unfortunately, the referee, Steve Mazzagatti (who apparently now thinks it's okay to have a p0rnstar mustache) called a time out in the middle of the pummeling, stood up Brock and took a point from him. While Brock was beating the hell out of Frank Mir, Mir rolls over exposing the back of his head. Brock connects, and they get stood up... a point was taken... no warning. I think that this is complete and utter crap, especially considering that in an earlier bout (Tyson Griffin vs. Gleason Tibau), Tibau was given a warning by the UFC referee for the same offense, even though he (apparently) only speaks Portuguese.

If this hadn't happened... if Brock's momentum wasn't interrupted... I strongly feel he would have won this. I believe the doctor would have stopped the fight due to the cut over Mir's eye. giving Brock the win.

...but no.

They stand up, Brock takes Mir down again. Mir tries for an arm bar (yeah, good luck arm barring arms that big), Mir opts for the leg, which he gets. Brock taps out to a leg bar in the first 90 seconds of the first round. Yes, a rookie mistake, a costly one, but ultimately I believe the interference from the referee cost Brock the match.

Here are the cuts on Frank Mir's face after the fight. Take note that the majority of them are over Frank Mir's eyes. Now imagine them bleeding profusely during the fight. The doctor definitely would have called the match.

$45 down the toilet. You're welcome, Dana. Heh.

Pros vs. Joes

Pros vs. Joes... not really TNA, but the episode I watched recently did feature Kurt Angle as one of the Pros.

Kurt Angle has always been one of my most favorite heels. Apparently he's also a heel in real life... or perhaps he didn't want to break kayfabe.

I don't normally watch this show, but it I gave it a shot since Angle was on it. We saw an extremely aggressive Angle talking a lot of smack to the Joes, punking them out, shoving them, and even pushing a finger into one of the Joe's eye. Then again, he didn't see very heel-ie in the clip years ago when he was helping a soccer mom with her K-Mart shopping spree that she won. Who knows?

Kurt's event (actually 2) was held outside, in the rain, in TNA's 6-sided ring. He was actually wrestling... 'really' wrestling. Amateur-style wrestling. It was funny to see Kurt Angle handing these guys their asses.

Speaking of TNA... I didn't comment on this week's show. To be honest, I didn't watch it. Although I like the action of TNA wrestling, their storylines and ripping-off of old gimmicks (i.e. Jay Lethal's Macho Man, 'Stone Cold' Shark Boy, etc) don't hold my interest. To be honest, I watching the season premiere of Lost. Sorry, maybe I'm one the few, but good storylines matter to me. What can I say... wrestling (and Star Trek, for that matter) is a soap opera for men.

The day is upon us.

As mentioned in my previous Brock Lesnar entry, I wasn't gonna spend the dough for today's PPV.

After watching 'UFC: All Access' featuring Brock Lesnar the other night, I've changed my mind. The guy is still a beast. I fully expect him to twist off Frank Mir's head tonight! I mean seriously... look at the photo from the weigh-in below! Brock Lesnar looks to be twice the size of Frank Mir (I've never seen them in the same photo before). Also take note of Dana White in the background... can you see the dollar signs in his eyes? I can. Heh.



This is bound to be a great fight... or it could end in the first 30 seconds...We'll see!
