WWE No Way Out on Habbo: Side Competition Announced

This morning Habbo Hotel announced a side competition to compliment the campaign that WWE is doing to promote WWE's 'No Way Out' pay-per-view on Sunday, Feb 17th.

In the side competition, Habbos are to gather all their friends and max out their Elimination Chamber room's capacity, then e-mail their Habbo name and a screenshot of the room into Habbo. Habbos that participate will receive a personalized trophy from Loderse (the virtual Hotel Manager) for their Elimination Chamber.

Side note: If you know a wrestling fan 13-18 years old, this is pretty cool thing for kids. I took a look around inside Habbo and kids are roleplaying wrestling matches inside the rooms they built.

Gillette Announces New “Tag Team” partner, WWE® Superstar John Cena

I was just at WWE's corporate site looking at press releases and found the following headline: 'Gillette Announces New "Tag Team" partner, WWE Superstar John Cena'

What the Hell? Okay, there's a couple issues that I have with this:

#1:
The majority of John Cena's fan base are kids. Seriously, in my opinion, you have to be under 12 years old to like John Cena's current character. Unless somewhere in the country, there is a large colony of 10 year olds with overgrown beards, from a marketing standpoint, this is just silly.

#2:
According to the press release, the new razor that Cena will be promoting is called the Gillette Phenom. Um, wouldn't the obvious choice of spokesperson be the Undertaker? I've heard commentators Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler, Michael Cole, Tazz, etc. call 'Taker 'The Phenom' more times than I can count. What's the matter Gillette? Don't you want the 'Deadman' as your spokesperson, telling viewers to let their stubble 'Rest... In... Peace...'?

Anyhow, find the press release below... or if you prefer, here's a link to the article on WWE's corporate site: Gillette Announces New "Tag Team" Partner

Multi-talented star will be featured in new Gillette Phenom razor campaign and other promotional initiatives

Boston, MA, February 11, 2008 – Gillette®, part of The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG), today announced a new relationship with WWE Superstar John Cena to promote its line of premium blades and razors, shave preparations and personal care items. Cena, a native of West Newbury, Massachusetts, will be featured in the advertising campaign for the launch of the new Gillette Fusion Phenom razor, as well as public appearances at mobile marketing events throughout the United States during the summer of 2008.

Cena, who has held the WWE Championship three times, the U. S. Championship three times, and the World Tag Team Championship, is also an actor and musical artist. In 2007, he starred in Fast Cars and Superstars: The Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race. He placed second in the speed challenge and first in the accuracy challenge before ultimately losing in the final episode to NFL Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway and placing third overall in the competition.

“John is an incredible talent. His appeal as a sports entertainer, actor and musical artist is perfect for our new razor and personal grooming products campaigns,” said Michelle Potorski, Associate Marketing Director, Gillette North America. “He made a fantastic impression when we worked with him on the television series, and he embodies the qualities we are looking for in a spokesperson, someone who believes that looking good is a critical part of performing at your best.”

Cena will make his debut as a Gillette spokesperson in a television commercial breaking in mid-February. Cena’s work with Gillette will be promoting Male Shaving Category products (including razors, blades, and shave preparations) and Personal Care products (including deodorants, antiperspirants, and body care products).

“I had a great experience working with Gillette on Fast Cars and Superstars and I am exciting about working with such a respected brand,” said Cena. “It’s great to be associated with Gillette. I have been a loyal Gillette man since I started shaving.”

Triple H & Stephanie McMahon Having Another Baby

Last night Wrestling News Desk, and later TMZ, confirmed the rumor that Triple H and Stephanie McMahon are having another baby. This will be Triple H & Stephanie's second child, and is due in July.

According to Wrestling News Desk, Stephanie made the announcement at 'a recent meeting before a show'.

Here's a (semi-kayfabe) moment from the past regarding their first pregnancy (We miss you in the WWE, Kurt):

WWE Friday Night Smackdown! 2/8/08

This is late, but better late than never...

Smackdown began with the 6 Elimination Chamber entrants trading words in the ring. Typical WWE fare... Batista starts by being interviewed by Michael Cole, then superstar after superstar interrupts until everyone is in the ring. This match at the upcoming No Way Out PPV confuses me a bit... Batista, Khali, Big Daddy V and Undertaker all make sense. I'm still confused as to why MVP and Finlay are in this match. I don't think anyone can take the idea of either MVP or Finlay winning that match seriously, so why bother putting them in it? If it were me booking the match, I would have included Kane, and re-introduced Big Show (The internet rumor mill suggested that Big Show would be unveiled at the Royal Rumble, but that never happened). I mean, if you are going to have a match filled with giants, make them all giants. Don't get me wrong, as Batista said, there will be a ton of men in the Smackdown Elimination Chamber... but I think my version would be far better.

Next up we saw Kane vs. Shelton Benjamin. I'm not sure what it is, but Shelton Benjamin's mic skills have waned. He used to be quite good on the mic, particularly during the Shelton Benjamin/Triple H feud. My gut tells me that he's really quite a humble guy, and it's hard for him to play the part of the conceited 'gold standard' of ECW. This was an entertaining match. SB did an impressive flying neck breaker off the turnbuckle... it put John Cena's 'throwback' to shame.

After commercial, we were served another bland episode of 'Chuck Palumbo fights with Jamie Noble over Michelle McCool'. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by this match, It was actually a good, quick-paced match... but of course, that would soon be ruined. After the Chuck pinned Noble... this whole episode... dragged on... forever. Seriously, all the oversold (Chuck, you're not a good actor) street fight garbage lasted longer than the wrestling match (Trust me, I timed it). You know, I think my biggest gripe with this whole story line is, how are we supposed to believe the new. 'American Bad Ass Rip-off' Chuck Palumbo (see Exhibit A), when all that we can remember is the 'ambiguously gay Billy & Chuck', Chuck Palumbo (see Exhibit B)

Seriously... I think this is why, at least in my mind, he never got over in the 'new' version of the F.B.I. stable.

Jamie & Festus vs. Deuce & Domino: Ugh... please don't waste my time.

Cutting Edge with Vickie Guerrero & Rey Mysterio. I am more sick of this storyline than other. Seriously, it's really in poor taste. After the whole Matt Hardy/Lita/Edge fiasco, I don't put anything past Edge, but I am astounded that Vickie, Rey & Chavo would agree to have anything to do with this storyline, especially in light of Eddie Guerrero's death. Yes, I know Eddie would want the show to go on, but I hardly think that he's condone this nonsense. Plus, Vickie is the worst on the mic than anyone. ...and I repeat what I said in a previous entry, put away and forget the 'GM in a wheelchair' storyline. It's lame, and we're really sick of seeing it.

Zack Ryder & Curt Hawkins got over on Jimmy Yang Wang and Shannon Moore again. Should be any day now before they are given the tag titles.

The Main Event presented the Elimination Chamber entrants in a 3-on-3 tag. Seriously, did you guys really need to come back from commercial to show the 6 entrances, just to go back to commercial when they're over? On a side note, I still chuckle when I think about the Royal Rumble... I think the real reason Undertaker was the first in the ring was due to the length of his entrance. If he was anywhere but #1, the next three guys would have made it to the ring before he even got there. Heh.

Anyhow, when we returned from commercial I was pleasantly surprised at the speed of this match considering the size of the men in it. Things wrapped up with Batista, Undertaker and Finlay in the middle of the ring staring down each other. I could help but laugh... Finlay, seriously, you have no chance... You and MVP shouldn't be in the chamber at No Way Out.

Smackdown! Leaving the CW?

Yesterday, the WWE the CW Network announced that the 2008 season of Smackdown! will be the last season on the CW.

Actually, I found this shocking. Smackdown! has been on the UPN, and then the CW for ten years... and just last November, Smackdown! was #1 with viewers 34 and under.

Where does Smackdown! go from here? I seriously can't see one of the major networks giving Smackdown a primetime time slot. Sure, there are infrequent Saturday Night's Main Event airings on NBC, so there is some kind of relationship there, but after the failure of the XFL on NBC, I don't know if they'll give Vince another primetime slot. My only thought, is the soon to be doomed 'My TV' network. I haven't watched this channel ever since the WB network turned into My TV... does anyone?

I suppose there's always USA or another slot on Sci Fi, but I really think that Smackdown should be kept on a national network. Let's face it: A good share of Sports Entertainment viewers are 'less affluent'. Does the WWE really want to lose these viewers? Sure, all less affluent viewers wouldn't be lost... but I know from experience, I've been worse off in my life. When money is tight, cable is one of the expenses that get cut.

Heaven forbid that Smackdown! gets relegated to the internet like Velocity (cancelled) and Heat (uploaded on Fridays). Does anyone even watch the webcast?

What Does Everybody Want? Remembering Al Snow

I had intended to write this yesterday, but what can I say? I was busy.

Al Snow was released as a developmental trainer in a follow-up announcement in the WWE/OVW situation. I read somewhere, (sorry, I don't remember which site), that WWE cites Al Snow as the primary reason that OVW 'failed'. If this is true, I hardly think it's fair to blame one man for the 'downfall' of an organization, when the truth of the matter is, WWE wanted all their 'minor leaguers' under one roof.

I imagine my beloved WWE must be a pretty tough company to work for. It surely seems like a fickle organization. One moment they build you up and love you, the next they release you.

We'll miss you Al... but I'm sure we'll see you pop up elsewhere... at least I hope so.

Some of my favorite Al Snow moments...

WWE Press Release Regarding OVW

Well, folks, here it is... Official word:

WWE® To Cease Affiliation With Ohio Valley Wrestling

STAMFORD, Conn., February 7, 2008 - World Wrestling Entertainment® announced today that Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) will no longer be affiliated with World Wrestling Entertainment as an official developmental territory, making Florida Championship Wrestling™ ( FCW™ ) WWE's official development training facility for talent around the globe.

"Ohio Valley Wrestling has been a tremendous partner with World Wrestling Entertainment through the years, and we thank them for their work in developing many of today's WWE Superstars," said John Laurinaitis, Senior Vice President of Talent Relations. "We look forward to Florida Championship Wrestling playing host to the next generation of WWE Superstars recruited from around the world."

Last November, WWE announced the formation of Florida Championship Wrestling, a new training center for future WWE Superstars. The facility has four wrestling rings and approximately 35 contracted athletes, with plans to increase that number to more than 70 in the near future. The facility is now fully operational, as WWE undertook large-scale renovations to FCW in order to accommodate its training needs. The finished training facility is more than 10,000 square feet, including an arena that will seat nearly 300 fans. The new training facility will also host a weekly show in front of a live audience, to be broadcast for regional television.

FCW is owned and operated by Steve Keirn, a former professional wrestler and producer for WWE. WWE trainer Tom Prichard oversees all talent training at the facility.

WWE Cuts Ties with OVW?

Something interesting just came through the news wire. I haven't seen anything official yet, but if it's true... wow. What a week. Deep South Wrestling shuts down, now Ohio Valley Wrestling. This leaves Florida Championship Wrestling (Kofi Kingston came out of here) as WWE's only developmental territory. Read on:

"World Wrestling Entertainment has severed all ties with Ohio Valley Wrestling. Effective immediately, OVW will no longer be a WWE developmental territory. Here are the details:

A meeting was held today with all contracted developmental talent. WWE's John Laurinaitis and Ty Baily made the announcement that all of the contracted wrestlers training at OVW there would be heading to Florida Championship Wrestling - which is now WWE's only developmental territory.

WWE wants all of their developmental talent in one place. From a logistical standpoint, it didn't make business sense to have their developmental talent in Kentucky, specially since so many WWE employees live in Florida.

Talent was told that there will be no releases stemming from OVW shutting down and that they will all be relocated to Tampa after finishing a few more weeks in OVW.

Talent was told the trainers in FCW would be Tom Prichard, Steve Keirn, & Former WWE Star Billy Kidman

FCW is slated to run its first official TV taping later this month and there have been plans in place to run a regular schedule of live events in Florida.

The move had been suspected for some time as the amount of contracted talents working in Louisville had dwindled greatly in the last year and morale in OVW overall had fallen. Over the years, OVW has groomed a number of WWE's biggest stars, including Brock Lesnar, Batista, John Cena and Randy Orton, among others."

ECW 2/5/08

For the first time in a long while, I enjoyed ECW last night.

The show opened with CM Punk ranting about his rematch clause and calling out Chavo. Rather than talk about the dialogue, here comes my Straight Edge and Fashion Police diatribe. We'll see CM Punk vs. Chavo at No Way Out. Side note: Apparently 'CM' now stands for 'Crazy Mariachi'.

I like CM Punk. The guy obviously has skills. HOWEVER... It's cool that CM Punk is Straight Edge, but honestly, it pisses me off that this is being used as a gimmick. What can I say, I'm an old, grown up punk rocker that came of age in Washington, DC, the birthplace of Straight Edge. I am friends with Ian MacKaye, the pioneer of straight Edge, his brother Alec MacKaye. I am friends with Brian Baker, former bassist for Minor Threat, current guitarist for Bad Religion. I could go on and on... I'm not bragging here, just stating facts. The point of all this is, I grew up in that scene. I lived it. I know what it is and what it means. While yes, I think it's great that kids are picking up a positive message, the problem that I have is the mindless mentality. I see kids in the crowd holding 'straight edge' signs. They like Straight Edge, because CM Punk is Straight Edge, not because it's what they believe in. Not because they understand it. Sorry, but I absolutely cannot stand it when people (yes, even kids) don't think for themselves. I call these folks, 'Sheep-le', simple following the flock. It's like GWAR said in 'Slaughterama', '...follow the herd... just another cow...'. CM Punk, WWE, whoever... don't cheapen a movement just to sell tickets and T Shirts.

Now let's focus my attention on the world of wrestling champion fashion... Chavo & MVP, pay attention. You two are the most serious of offenders (any former or future champions may want to take note too). Didn't you learn anything from Triple H? When coming to the ring in street clothes, or more importantly a suit, that title belongs on your shoulder, not on your waist. Holy crap, have some dignity. ...and while I have your attention, Chavo, might I suggest NOT tucking your jeans into your cowboy boots. Heh.

Now that that's over, the whole CM Punk/Chavo exchange set up the first-ever 'Gulf of Mexico match'. Uhm, why can't you just call it a street fight? Oh, I see, you have to through your opponent in the Gulf of Mexico. Hmm... kinda lame. I was pleased to hear Armando Estrada say this was an Extreme Rules match, but it wouldn't be long before I found that not one weapon would be used... unless a fisherman's bait cooler counts as a weapon. Bummer.

First match of the night... Diva tag. Not much to remark on here. Stripper-esque backflips by Kelly Kelly, followed by a botched springboard elbow in the corner. Michelle McCool actually showed improvement. Jumping into the hurricarana at the turnbuckle was impressive. for the most part, typical Diva fare... oversold, botched and blown.

John Morrison vs. Tommy Dreamer. It's good to see more of Tommy Dreamer on TV. Looks like they've hitched his wagon to Colin Delaney... (does he even have a wagon?)

Saw a promo with Steven Richards. He comes back from injury net week. It amazing how shocking I find original ECW footage sometimes. Maybe I'm getting old... Maybe Vince has un-dulled my senses with 'safe wrestling'.

Kofi Kingston (Mr. Yellow Legwarmers) vs. Jamie Curtis. Last night, Jamie Curtis was the first one to join Kofi Kingston's 'Kiss My Sack' club. Kingston jumped onto Curtis' shoulders while in the turnbuckle and started dropping headshots. Uhm, sorry, but I don't need (or want) to see Kofi teabagging a jobber. Side note: Kofi, the leg drop was lame when Hogan used it... it more lame when you use it, with both legs I might add. The Bicycle Kick I can live with.

The 'Gulf of Mexico match' was kind of a disappointment. Don't tell the viewer it's an Extreme Rules match if that's not what it is. It was a street fight with water.

More on Friday... or Saturday, unless something I find something else to ramble on about.

Documentary Suggests Benoit had Brain Damage

A new documentary by Canadian network CBC, 'The Fifth Estate', suggests that Chris Benoit was suffering from brain damage from repeated concussions, going so far as saying that Benoit's brain resembled that of an 85-year-old man with dementia. This investigation was promped by Chris Nowinski (remember him? Mr. Harvard?). Apprently, when Nowinski heard about Chris Benoit, he called police and suggested examining Benoit's brain to see if concussions played a role in any episodes of rage or depression. It was reported that Vince McMahon dismissed the concussion theory, saying that he couldn't have performed as his did with this condition.

Chris, not that it makes what happened okay (Killing your wife, your son, and hanging yourself is inexcusable), but I truly hope that this was the case. I can see how this might have been the case, with all of the chair shots, headbutts and swan dive headbutts I saw over the years, not to mention all the ones that I didn't see. You were an idol of mine, and always seemed like a stand-up guy. I was shocked and dismayed when I first heard what you had done.

DSW Closes Shop

IWA Deep South, the developmental territory that gave us Mike Miz, the Great Khali, Matt Striker, MVP, Ryder & Hawkins and many others, has shut down citing the reasons of MMA popularity and 'Satan's son, Vince McMahon'. The statement was posted on the IWA Mid-South message board. Read on:

"IWA Deep South is closed and we have no plans to bring it back at this time. Thanks to all the fans who supported us the last two years. Pro Wrestling just isn't what it used to be. There is way too much drama and bulls*** that goes on. Also to the promoters lets face the facts, there is NO MONEY in the wrestling business anymore. It just isn't worth the risk. The average person will never like wrestling, so it doesn't matter. MMA is the wave of the future, it is popular in the mainstream, and everyone is making money. Sorry to burst everyones bubble but, pro wrestling will become just like boxing almost obsolete, irrelevant to the mainstream. We have satan's son Vince McMahon to thank for that. MMA is taking the place of wrestling and boxing, as the top action sport that is just facts. When you put PRO WRESTLING at the top of your poster to advertise, no matter if its the best s*** in the world the average person don't give a s***. However if you put ULTIMATE FIGHTING at the top of the poster, you have a line two miles long to get into the son of a b****. I am not talking down about wrestling, I Love wrestling, I have all my life, its just looking like it may have ran its coarse. So don't anyone get mad, what I am saying is from 7 years of promoting shows. The last year from observing MMA I have seen it take off like crazy. It is truly sad, I know but it appears to be the way it is."

I understand your frustration, but a little bitter, aren't we?

WWE Monday Night Raw 2/4/08

Well, holy crap. I take a one-day break from writing and now look at all the stuff there is to write about. Well, let's start at the beginning...

Monday Night Raw...

Raw opened with the Orton/Cena contract signing. All I can say is, 'yawn'. I'm not into this rivalry. I'm sorry, I really don't mean to get down on you John, but I'm not happy that you are back. I'm not like some smarks on the internet that go so far as to say you can't wrestle, but you really need to spice things up. A jumping shoulder block... 'five knuckle shuffle' (the most useless move since the Peoples' Elbow. At least The Rock had style), the FU... the FU... a modified death valley driver... a modified body slam is probably more accurate. At this point, in fact, ever since you turned face, you have to be under 12 to like your character. You aren't a rapper, are you certainly aren't a Marine... you played one in a movie. Stop saluting. You insult people that actually served their country. Sgt. Slaughter is a former Marine... you aren't.

Next on my hit list are the Divas. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... at this point the only Divas that should be on TV are Beth Phoenix and Victoria. Fenn's bottom line, if you can't wrestle, then stay out of the ring. Once again, Mickie James, the Queen of botched spots, blew it in this match. She fell off of the turnbuckle for Pete's sake. JR claims Beth Phoenix was shaking the rope off-camera so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt... the botched Tornado DDT is another story. If being a failure of execution wasn't enough, she has to steal Trish Stratus' signature moves. I was surprised to see a guillotine choke in this match (and have JR call it that for that matter). Between that, Taker's new leg choke, and Ken Kennedy's new leg submission it seems apparent that creative is having more MMA moved incorporated (Deep South, maybe you should have followed suit... more on you later)

The next match was Kennedy vs. Super Crazy. Ken Kennedy is by far my favorite these days. Great mic skills.... great showman... great heel. While I was glad to see an ECW original like Super Crazy, it really bummed me out that he is now being used as a jobber. We saw for the first time Kennedy's aforementioned new submission hold. I guess they are giving Kennedy the push before No Way Out. As much as I'd like for Kennedy to get over, I have a feeling that Flair will get retired at Wrestlemania to an established Main Eventer. Side note, Kennedy's 'Whoo!' is hilarious.

Mike Adamle. I'm still confused as to why Adamle is on WWE, and Hogan is on American Gladiators. (Not that I want to see Hogan anymore, mind you. I'm more tired of seeing Hogan, than I am seeing Flair)

Paul London is back. Yay. This should be a great match. Kendrick & London are a great tag team and fun to watch. Oh wait, nevermind. The match is over. London didn't even get in the ring. Blah.

Vince, you are a funny, funny man. Seriously, you confuse me. (The weird power walk where you lose control of your arms has always confused me). Please stop reviving the Kiss My Ass gimmick. Have some pride, man. No one wants to see your promos of getting an 'ass-cial', even if it is a shoot. Also, is it a really good idea to attack the parents/kids in the audience when they seem to be the largest group supporting WWE? You are losing a lot of 18-35 males to MMA. Hornswoggle. I used to like how the Hornswoggle character was being used, even as fantastical as it was. A couple weeks ago Creative took away his ability to speak, and now is seemingly being portrayed as a child, rather than just the 'illegitimate bastard son'. Side note: One would think that joining the 'Bite My Ass' club is much worse than the 'Kiss My Ass' club. Seriously... Ew. Additional side note: The mark screaming 'My eyes! My eyes!' when Vince dropped his pants slayed me.

Next we saw HBK, followed but four other Elimination Chamber entrants, followed by Snitsky?! I guess Trips got the night off. This set up the Main Event, three on three tag. Jumping ahead, this was one of the better tag matches I've seen in a while. I'm not gonna give the play by play though. Please get Bradshaw a new gimmick! This gimmick sucked with Ted DiBiase, and it sucks now!

Hardcore Holly/Cody Rhodes vs. Cade/Murdoch. Firstly, Cade/Murdoch wtf are you wearing? Heh. Secondly, Bob, I don't know what you're doing, but keep doing it. You're well past your 30's and haven't been cut yet? Kudos.

The show ended with an arm wrestling match between John Cena and Mark Henry. Uhm... the crew set up the arm wrestling table the wrong way. That's alright, the ref will be sure to turn the table. Oh wait, nope. Well that's okay, either Cena or henry will be sure to fix it. Hmm. No, they are too busy talking about Cena's oily hands. Ah screw it, we'll just use this prop the wrong way. no one will notice... Bah.
